A modern glass and steel framed palm house inspired by 19th century greenhouses.
The Project
Overlooking the water in the rear yard of a private residence, this glass and steel framed palm house serves as a greenhouse and entertainment space. The greenhouse is approximately 1,800 square feet and measures approximately 36 feet to the top of the central roof.
Structural Features
The steel framed structure consists of custom multi-curved built-up steel sections with intricate web cutout patterns and tall steel columns to support the glass roof and walls. The lateral system of steel moment frames and cantilevered steel columns was designed to resist increased wind pressures from the open waterfront exposure. Complex geometries and site assembly requirements dictated the use of intricate field bolted connections to the wide flange exterior columns and eave members.
