The Project
Succotash is a modern 310-seat restaurant located in the repurposed historic Equitable Bank Building, which is one of only 15 buildings in the District with both a landmarked interior and exterior. To create space for the restaurant’s needs, a new U-shaped mezzanine was added over the existing structure. Additionally, a new, winding glass and metal monumental stair was added, and a new elevator was added to the back of the space.
Structural Features
The existing, elevated floor structure includes concrete joists with clay tile filler supported on a steel frame of beams and columns. To support the new mezzanine, the structure was strengthened in some areas and supplemental framing was added in others to handle the added loads. Ehlert Bryan’s thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and creativity enabled this historic structure to be repurposed, bringing the architect’s vision to life.
