The Project
The Sparrow MOB medical and dental building provides varying public services, some of which include outpatient services, infusion services, physical therapy including a small gym, cardiology, general surgery, oncology, and pediatric services. The office building has MRI equipment, CT scanning equipment, and X-ray equipment.
Structural Features
The structural system consists of a thin concrete slab over composite metal deck and composite steel beams. Chevron steel bracing was used to laterally stabilize the building using select locations that align with architectural features. Due to the cold Michigan climate and construction sequencing, the contractor chose to completely erect the steel superstructure and frame the exterior walls prior to placing the concrete over the metal deck. As a result of the reduced lateral capacity of the untopped metal deck floor and roof diaphragms, additional temporary lateral bracing was required to stabilize the building until the concrete floors and roof could be cast.
