New, two-story hospital located in Ionia, Michigan

The Project

The hospital consists of Level IV Trauma services, imaging, radiology, cardiology, surgical, lab services, patient rooms, café, gift shops and a chapel. The 70,000 SF hospital achieved LEED status and is located next to an airfield for fast patient transport.

Structural Features

The building consists of structural steel beams, girders, and columns on standard spread footings. Lateral resistance was achieved with steel braced frames that align with architectural elements. The second-floor structural system consists of a concrete slab on composite steel decking and composite steel beams. Special attention was given to limiting vibrations of the second floor and roof framing considering hung surgical equipment, microscopes, and patient (sleeping) rooms. Vibrations due to normal walking or running was mitigated using additional damping and increased floor stiffness in floor and roof framing members. The hospital was designed as an essential facility, with the associated higher importance factors on wind, snow, and seismic loadings. In addition, FM Global Insurance requirements dictated many of the minimum design loadings on the roofs and walls.
