A five-year project to completely renovate and expand an existing high school in Herndon, Virginia, while it remained in full operation.
dhe Project
A complete renovation and expansion of an existing 290,000 SF high school while the building remained in full operation. The project included a new science wing, new theater support spaces, and revitalizing all existing academic, support, athletic, and collaborative learning spaces.
Modernization of the building includes replacing the HVAC and electrical systems, upgrading data and security, and selective shell improvements, such as window replacement, roof replacement, masonry wall repairs, and demolishing an addition built in 1990.
Structural Features
The additions are metal deck on steel joists roof, with concrete slab over metal deck elevated floors. The gravity systems are a combination of steel frame and load-bearing masonry walls, with conventional shallow foundations and concrete slab-on-grade mail level floors. Critical to the construction is the continued operation of the high school during construction. Coordination with the construction phases is conducted and accommodations are made to maintain existing hung utilities until the new utilities are operational.
