The Project
The project is a 14,700 SF, one-story, emergency services center for police, fire, and emergency forces servicing the west side of Fort Belvoir Army Base with a three-bay drive-through apparatus bay. The program required achieving a LEED Silver Certificate to encourage using low maintenance and high-performance materials, renewable and alternative energy strategies, sustainable design concepts, and energy conservation methodology. The project was designed and constructed though a design/build methodology.
Structural Features
The framing system for the building utilizes economical lightgage trusses spaced up to 4 feet on center with a galvanized metal roof deck supported on load bearing masonry walls at the exterior and lightgage walls at the interior locations. The foundation is shallow spread footing bearing. The mechanical equipment was located on a mezzanine located within the space of the roof trusses thus freeing up floor space for programmatic functions. The building was designed to comply with the DOD Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings, UFC 7-010-01.
