A new recreation and community center with a variety of amenities including a competition pool and full-size gymnasium in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Project
A two-story,115,000 SF recreation and community center featuring a 50-meter competition pool, leisure pool, full-size gymnasium with line markings for a variety of activities, locker rooms, running track, community rooms, offices, and other support spaces. There will also be a multi-use train around the property, a large courtyard with seating, a splash play area, and playground equipment.
Structural Features
The roof over the aquatic center includes 12-foot-wide skylights running across 75 percent of the width of the roof. These breaks in the roof diaphragm allowed us to get creative and design a series of single bay moment frames consisting of large W24 columns connected by a 10-foot-deep truss spanning the 100 feet that supported gravity and lateral loads allowing the ceiling of the spaces to be a pleasant, light-filled space. We used structural steel framing consisting of wide flange members and bar joists to frame out the 2nd floor and roof. The foundations are conventional shallow spread footings.
