The Project
The U.S. Army Materiel Command manages the global supply chain for its land force. This project was a design and construction of an office building including a six-story tower with full basement, a three-story tower, a one-story entry lobby and a one-story power plant building. The project was delivered to the Corps of Engineers, Mobile District through a design/build methodology.
Structural Features
The design satisfied anti-terrorism provisions, including progressive collapse and blast. It was designed on an accelerated schedule, with all members using BIM to produce their respective models. The structural system is steel framing with composite beams and girders supported by steel columns. Bays up to 32 feet by 44 feet are utilized to create large column free areas. The floor slabs consisted of 3-1/4 inch lightweight concrete over a 3-inch deck. This system delivered the required fire rating of the floor without the need of fireproofing and lowered the steel erection cost by lowering the piece count. The lateral system is braced frames. The façade is precast concrete. The onsite soils were found to be incapable of supporting the building foundations and were therefore improved by the installation of dense aggregate piers allowing the use of shallow spread footings.
